Telling the Stories of the wildlife, wildlands and people of the american west the way they Live them.
My work examines the complex relationships between humans and wildlife in the American West. One where a morning walk can turn into an encounter with an elk herd, and a quiet river carries the stories of salmon, bears, and the people who live alongside them. These latest stories explore the moments when our paths cross with the creatures who share this landscape: sometimes tender, sometimes tense, always revealing something about who we are. I invite you to wander through them below.

Wilderness Roots

Doug Zimmer was born in Montana and grew up on the Flathead Indian Reservation. Trained as a journalist at the University of Montana, he left that profession, became a freelance writer and was published in Outdoor Life, International Game Warden and other magazines. His interest in wildlife and wild lands led him to a thirty-year career in state and federal wildlife agencies before retiring to write full time. Zimmer has written more than two dozen short stories centered around life on the Reservation and his experiences across the Pacific Northwest. He has finished one novel and is currently working on a series of books about crimes against wildlife - and the people who commit them.
